Assisting Nicaraguan Society- The Children’s Fund is not a misnomer, and children receive 80% of our focus. However, being a community-based group, heavily involved in community activities, it’s impossible to not see the large amount of elderly or chronically sick persons that make up part of the community.
Unable to work, with no social security, and with no health benefits, these last years of their life may be the worst for many persons in Nicaragua. Those that are fortunate to have the support of their families will suffer less than those whose families are barely feeding themselves.
Having seen this over and over, ANS-TCF has implemented a program focused on providing the elderly and those persons who may have incapacitating illnesses, with food and medical packages that are given out monthly.
In Nicaragua, once they are no longer able to work, people are often discarded. Many times, they are abandoned or shunned by their own, seen as a problem and as an expenditure that provides no benefits.
This is what happens to many because of age or diseases that do not permit them to continue to be part of the labor force. Going from middle age to becoming an elderly person is truly a social and economic disaster for many.
The great majority of poor, usually work per day or at jobs where they do not pay social security.
In many cases, they don’t understand the purpose or need of making these payments till they are too old when they find that they are not employable and thus begins a battle against hunger and the ailment that many suffer.
In many cases, elderly persons take care of their grandchildren and play an important role in their education, all while being unable to work or provide. For this reason, we not only focus on the children’s immediate needs but also on their surroundings.
Contribute to the health and education of children and families who would otherwise stay chained to an endless a cycle of poverty.
