Before the Onset of the Rainy Season, ANS-TCF will Begin to Provide Mosquito Netting to Children and The Elderly

Dengue, Zika, and Chikungunya are common vector transmitted diseases in Nicaragua all year long with the number of infected increasing during the rainy season. The area surrounding Veracruz and Piedra Menuda is surrounded by “arroyos”,  washes and the water that is left standing provides a perfect habitat for mosquito reproduction.

Although vector transmitted diseases are reduced in the dry season, the winds associated with this period and the pollen and dust in the air cause an increase in infectious respiratory diseases in both the young and old. Now, these two major problems are compounded by COVID-19 and must be tackled in diverse ways.

Veracruz Has The Only Health Center in the Area

Veracruz, which has the only health center in the area has one nebulizer which at last count was used by 217 persons, they also only have 2 masks which are also used by the same number of persons.

On weekends and two days of the week, the health center is not open, and the closest nebulizer is almost 20 miles away by bus, a cost that many parents or relatives can’t assume.

The areas around the town have been traditionally used for agriculture with large areas being planted in peanuts and this land is left barren after the harvest.

A windy season is a normal event starting in December and extending close to the rainy season, which starts at the end of May. The dirt, the minute particles of agricultural debris, and pollen are a hazard as severe as the vector transmitted diseases.

Providing Support To Improve The Health of the Community

ANS-TCF has acquired nebulizers with extra masks to provide this service to the area. Although the ones available are all located in Veracruz and persons from the other villages must come here to use them.
